Tom Cruise’s Digger flops with $8 million opening

Tom Cruise’s new film Digger has opened to just $8 million in North America. The result could make it the biggest box office bomb of 2026.
The satirical comedy played in 3,321 theatres. Early estimates put the opening at $8 million, though rivals think the final number could be closer to $7.5 million.
The film reportedly cost $160 million to $180 million to make. Warner Bros spent another $100 million on global marketing, according to Variety.
Sources say Digger could lose $150 million to $200 million in theatres. It would need about $300 million to $350 million worldwide to break even.
The international start was also weak. It earned $12 million from 73 markets, for a worldwide opening of $20 million.
Digger is directed by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu. Cruise plays a powerful oil tycoon preparing for a major ecological disaster. It released on October 2.
Warner Bros had hoped for an $18 million to $20 million opening. Box office experts had said a film with that budget needed closer to $40 million.
The flop is a rare misfire for Cruise, whose films usually open big.
