Stephen A. Smith walks back mockery of Lane Johnson retirement

ESPN commentator Stephen A. Smith drew heavy criticism after mocking Lane Johnson’s decision to retire for mental health reasons.
On Wednesday’s First Take, Smith questioned the timing of Johnson’s retirement. The Eagles star had announced he was stepping away after 14 seasons to focus on his mental health.
‘Four games into the 2026 season, a dude that has been in the league forever sits back and says, I need to focus on my mental health,’ Smith said in a mocking tone.
Smith suggested the Eagles’ 2-2 start was the real reason behind the decision. The comments sparked an immediate backlash online.
Smith later walked back his remarks. He has a history of controversial takes on First Take, but this one hit a nerve given Johnson’s long openness about mental health.
Johnson’s teammates, coaches and owner Jeffrey Lurie all supported his decision. Lurie said Johnson’s courage in advocating for mental health awareness has saved lives.
