Hansal Mehta’s acclaimed 2013 biographical drama Shahid, starring Rajkummar Rao as slain lawyer Shahid Azmi, has finally begun streaming on Prime Video — nearly 13 years after its release.

The long-delayed OTT arrival prompted a note from the film’s co-writer and editor Apurva Asrani, who questioned why it took so long and described a “politics of fear” around the film. Shahid won critical acclaim and the National Film Award for Rao but never had a mainstream digital release until now.

The film traces Azmi’s life from his imprisonment under TADA to his career defending terror accused, ending with his 2010 murder in Mumbai. It remains one of Indian cinema’s most celebrated courtroom dramas.

Rao has since become one of Bollywood’s leading actors, while Mehta went on to direct acclaimed projects including Scam 1992. The streaming release gives a new generation its first easy access to the landmark film.

Shahid premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2012 before its Indian release, and its reputation has only grown through word of mouth. Film scholars often cite it as a turning point that proved courtroom dramas could find both critical respect and a devoted audience in India.
