‘Musk’ Documentary Blocked From Ads Across Social Platforms

Alex Gibney’s new documentary about Elon Musk is facing a strange problem: social media platforms keep refusing to run its ads. The film is called “Musk.”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, every major social platform has rejected paid ads for the film. YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Meta and even Musk’s own platform X refused to run the trailer ads.
The platforms reportedly labeled the ads as “political content.” Bleecker Street, the film’s US distributor, says this is wrong. The ads promote a movie trailer, not a candidate or campaign. Meta already rejected Bleecker Street’s appeal.
Musk himself has called the film a “hit piece.” He has threatened legal action against the production company, Jigsaw Productions. Musk has described himself as a “free speech absolutist.”
There is a twist. After the story broke, Meta said restoring the ads was “an error” and would run them. TheWrap reported on September 26 that ads will now run on Meta and YouTube.
“Musk” opens in theaters on October 9. It is a four-hour documentary from the Oscar-winning director of “Taxi to the Dark Side.”
