Jon Watts is set to direct the first film in a new Star Wars trilogy being developed by Lucasfilm, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

Watts, best known for directing Tom Holland’s three Spider-Man films, previously co-created the Disney+ series Star Wars: Skeleton Crew and directed its first and last episodes.

The trilogy is being written by Simon Kinberg, known for his work on the X-Men films and as a co-creator of Star Wars Rebels. The story is expected to continue the Skywalker Saga after 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker, with Daisy Ridley expected to return as Rey in some capacity.

Sources say Lucasfilm hopes to begin production as early as next year, though the project has not yet been formally greenlit by parent company Disney. It is described as the furthest along of Lucasfilm’s film projects after Star Wars: Starfighter, directed by Shawn Levy and starring Ryan Gosling, which arrives in May 2027.

Lucasfilm had no comment on the report. Watts is seen as a steady choice for a franchise that has famously struggled with director changes in the past.
