Hayley Kiyoko wants to take the Pirates of the Caribbean to new waters. The singer, novelist and filmmaker says her dream project is a lesbian take on the famous pirate franchise. “I would love to do a lesbian pirate show or movie, Keira Knightley, but gay,” Kiyoko said Thursday night. “Very gay and fantastical.” She made the comments at an industry event alongside other queer filmmakers. The remark nods to Knightley’s role as Elizabeth Swann in the original Pirates of the Caribbean films. Kiyoko wants the same swashbuckling high-seas adventure, centered on queer characters. The franchise is one of the most successful in film history, with five movies earning over $4.5 billion worldwide. Her directorial debut, Girls Like Girls, released in US theaters in June and holds 86 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. The idea of a queer pirate adventure is not a reboot with Disney’s backing. For now, it is a filmmaker’s wish. But Kiyoko has turned dreams into reality before.
