Hansal Mehta’s acclaimed biographical drama Shahid is finally available for streaming, arriving on Prime Video nearly 13 years after its 2013 theatrical release. The film stars Rajkummar Rao in the title role.

Shahid tells the story of lawyer and human rights activist Shahid Azmi, who defended people accused in terror cases before he was assassinated in Mumbai in 2010. The film won Rao the Best Actor award and Mehta the Best Director honour at the 61st National Film Awards.

Co-writer and editor Apurva Asrani reacted to the streaming debut by asking why it took 13 years, pointing to what he described as a climate of fear around political films. The film had long been unavailable on major streaming platforms.

The arrival gives a new generation of viewers access to one of the defining performances of Rao’s career. Shahid was widely praised on release for its restrained, unsentimental telling of Azmi’s life and death.
