Tom Cruise’s Digger Opens to $8M, His Worst in 19 Years

Tom Cruise’s Digger is heading for an opening weekend of around 8 million dollars from 3,300 North American theatres, well below the 12 to 15 million dollars Warner Bros. had projected.
The Alejandro G. Inarritu dark comedy earned about 3.3 million dollars on Friday including Thursday previews. It would be Cruise’s lowest opening weekend since 2007’s Lions for Lambs, which debuted with 6.7 million dollars.
The film carries a production budget of 125 to 180 million dollars after production ran over schedule. It earned a C+ CinemaScore, one of the worst audience grades of Cruise’s career.
Cruise plays Digger Rockwell, a balding oil tycoon, alongside Riz Ahmed, John Goodman and Sandra Huller. Critics are divided, with the film holding a 51% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Amazon MGM’s Verity is expected to top the weekend with around 33 million dollars. Sony’s Resident Evil and Paramount’s The Heart of the Beast are also outpacing Digger.
