Ajay Devgn: Making a Hindi Film Is the Hardest

Making a Hindi film is more difficult than making a regional or international film, actor Ajay Devgn said on day 2 of FICCI Frames 2026.
Devgn was speaking alongside Alok Jain, head of Hindi and English entertainment business at JioStar, about their upcoming film Drishyam: The Conclusion, which releases on October 2.
You do not know what your target audience is, Devgn said. When you make a Punjabi, Telugu or Tamil film, you understand the audience because it is made for a certain region and you know their tastes.
For Hindi-speaking regions, he said, the language changes every 80 to 90 kilometres, and thought processes change with it. Filmmakers must also navigate mass and class audiences across cities and rural centres.
As a result, a film liked by one section may not be liked by another, and the numbers do not come as intended.
In international cinema, he added, makers know their target audience – how they think and behave – so they can make a film for them. In Hindi, filmmakers have to target everybody.
Hence, Devgn said, it is most difficult to write a Hindi film.
