NMC Releases 63,177 PG Medical Seats for 2026-27

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has released the seat matrix for the 2026-27 academic year, listing 63,177 postgraduate medical seats across India for MD, MS, Diploma, DM and MCh programmes.
The matrix was published by the commission’s Medical Assessment and Rating Board on September 29, 2026, ahead of national counselling for NEET-PG candidates, Medical Dialogues reported.
The NMC clarified that the matrix does not include seats from applications received for increasing intake in existing courses or for starting new courses for 2026-27.
Karnataka has the highest number of postgraduate seats in the country at 8,323, according to Medical Dialogues. MD General Medicine has the most seats nationally, followed by MD Anaesthesiology and MD Paediatrics.
The release marks another expansion of India’s specialist doctor pipeline. Official data presented to Parliament showed national postgraduate capacity had grown from 31,185 positions in 2023-24 to more than 86,000 across all institutional categories in 2025-26, according to Health and Family.
