West Bengal plans own mustard oil brand with NDDB

The West Bengal government plans to launch its own edible oil brand, starting with mustard oil. The move follows the model of its dairy brand, Banglar Dairy.

Cooperation Minister Ashok Kirtania announced the plan at an NDDB programme in Kolkata. Panchayat Minister Dilip Ghosh said the brand would help contain prices and strengthen cooperatives.

The National Dairy Development Board will support the state in setting up the brand. NDDB chairman Meenesh Shah said the board could also help with procurement.

A 525-acre pilot project will cover East Burdwan, Murshidabad, West Midnapore, Jhargram and South 24 Parganas. It will promote mustard, groundnut and sunflower cultivation through cooperatives and farmer-producer organisations.

NDDB will procure the produce from participating farmers. The goal is to cut the state’s dependence on mustard supplies from other states and abroad.

NDDB has also signed an MoU with IIT Kharagpur for technology and marketing support in the oilseed value chain.
