Shanghai Electric’s gas turbine makes overseas debut in Malaysia

Shanghai Electric has commissioned a gas turbine at the Samalaju Combined Cycle Gas Turbine plant’s Unit 3 in Sarawak, Malaysia. It is the company’s first such overseas deployment, according to a China News Service report.
The 500MW-class turbine was supplied as part of a full package that included engineering, procurement and construction along with lifecycle services.
The company said the project demonstrates that Chinese heavy-duty gas turbine technology is now competitive in international markets. Heavy-duty gas turbines have long been dominated by Western manufacturers.
The Samalaju plant adds 500 megawatts of capacity to Sarawak’s power grid. The commissioning was reported on September 29.
The project reflects China’s broader push to export power equipment. Chinese companies have been winning power plant contracts across Southeast Asia as regional electricity demand grows.
