Mumbai CNG price up Rs 1 to Rs 89/kg, fifth hike this year

Mahanagar Gas has raised compressed natural gas prices by Rs 1 per kg across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, taking the price to Rs 89 per kg. The revised rates took effect from midnight on September 30.

This is the fifth CNG price hike in Mumbai this year. Prices have climbed from Rs 80.50 in January to Rs 89 now. A month ago, MGL raised the price by Rs 2 to Rs 88.

The company cited the rising cost of input gas and the need to ensure continuity of supply. It said higher international gas prices, linked to the West Asia crisis, had raised its procurement costs.

The hike affects about 12.93 lakh vehicles across the region, including taxis, auto rickshaws and buses. MGL supplies CNG to more than 1.3 million vehicles through over 500 stations and connects around 3.2 million households to piped gas. Transporters warn the increase could push auto fares higher for daily commuters.
