Kandla port crosses 100 million tonnes cargo 51 days early

Deendayal Port at Kandla has crossed 100 million metric tonnes of cargo this fiscal. It reached the milestone on October 6.
The port beat last year’s pace by 51 days. That is a sharp jump in throughput for India’s largest major port by cargo volume.
Crude oil, fertilisers and coal drove the numbers. Port officials credited faster vessel turnaround and better berth use.
The milestone underlines the port’s role in India’s energy and fertiliser imports. It also reflects steady industrial demand.
The port authority said it is on track for another record year. Expansion work on additional berths continues.
Kandla is India’s busiest major port by cargo handled. Officials said mechanisation of berths has cut cargo handling time. The port serves the industrial belt of Gujarat and north India. Crude oil imports feed refineries in the region. Fertilisers move onward to farms across the country. The authority is also adding green energy capacity at the port.
