Reliance Jio added 2.4 million mobile subscribers in August while Bharti Airtel gained 2.1 million users, according to data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India. The monthly figures show continued subscriber momentum for the two leading operators, with most of the growth coming from urban markets.

Analysts tracking the sector said the additions underline the resilience of wireless demand even as the industry deals with pricing pressures and the rollout of new services. The urban segment accounted for the bulk of the net wireless additions, while rural growth remained more muted during the month.

The data also reflects the competitive dynamics between the top two players, both of whom have been investing in network capacity and digital services to retain and attract users. Industry observers will now watch whether the trend sustains through the festival quarter, which typically brings promotional offers and higher churn. The figures come amid a broader churn in the market as smaller operators continue to lose ground to the larger networks.
