Infosys to shift a third of 3.2 lakh staff into specialist roles

Infosys plans to move 25% to 33% of its 320,000-plus workforce into specialist roles spanning AI, data, advanced engineering and domain expertise, as artificial intelligence reshapes the IT services industry.
The plan, outlined at the company’s Americas Confluence event in Washington DC, includes creating around 6,000 “frontier engineers” — elite technologists who will lead the company’s most advanced AI work. The shift moves away from the traditional pyramid model towards a Y-shaped career structure, where employees choose between becoming AI-enabled generalists or deep specialists.
Infosys says it has already trained 270,000 employees on AI tools and 80,000 on AI coding assistants. The $20 billion-revenue company is hiring aggressively from Indian engineering institutes and US campuses, competing directly with AI labs for top talent.
CEO Salil Parekh framed the move as a response to clients demanding AI-first delivery. CEO-designate Ashiss Kumar Dash also appeared at the event. HFS Research analyst Dana Daher said the shift reflects how quickly enterprise AI adoption is forcing services firms to rebuild their talent base.
