Single GST Registration Likely for Online Sellers

Small online sellers may soon need only one GST registration. The GST Council is expected to take up the proposal this week.
At present, sellers need registration in every state where they supply goods. They must also keep a principal place of business in each state.
The new scheme would be optional. It targets small suppliers who sell only through e-commerce operators. Small means output GST liability up to Rs 2.5 lakh a month.
Sellers would need a physical presence in at least one state. That would be their principal place of business. They must pass physical verification and Aadhaar biometric checks there.
The e-commerce operator would share compliance duties. A monthly input tax credit limit of Rs 2.5 lakh is proposed as a safeguard.
The move could help small sellers reach buyers across India. It would cut the cost of selling online for thousands of small businesses. The proposal will be discussed by the GST Council this week.
