GST Council meeting rescheduled to October 8

The 57th GST Council meeting has been rescheduled from October 7 to October 8 in New Delhi, officials said. The meeting is expected to take up a significant proposal to remove arrest powers under GST provisions, a move aimed at making tax compliance more business-friendly. Any change would require the appropriate legislative process after the Council's discussion. The proposal is being viewed as part of efforts to reduce concerns about excessive enforcement powers in the indirect tax regime. The rescheduling comes days after the government's broader GST reforms, which reduced the number of tax slabs. The World Bank has noted that India's GST reforms are supporting consumption growth. For businesses, professionals and taxpayers, changes to GST enforcement could reshape compliance procedures and interactions with tax authorities. The Council, chaired by the Union Finance Minister with state finance ministers as members, is the apex decision-making body for the indirect tax system.
