Gold holds near $4,150 as weak US jobs data cuts hike bets

Gold steadied near $4,150 an ounce on Monday as a surprisingly weak US jobs report eased expectations of another Federal Reserve rate hike. Gold futures were up 0.5 percent at $4,180, while spot prices hovered around $4,144.

The September employment report showed only 29,000 nonfarm payrolls added, far short of the 90,000 analysts had expected. Figures for July and August were revised down by a combined 60,000, and the unemployment rate ticked up to 4.2 percent from 4.1 percent.

The soft data reshaped rate expectations. According to CME FedWatch, the probability of another Fed hike in October collapsed from nearly 70 percent to about 22 percent. The central bank had raised its benchmark rate by 25 basis points on September 16, to a range of 3.75 to 4.00 percent.

Gold, which pays no interest, usually benefits when rate-hike pressure eases. But a firm dollar and Treasury yields at multi-decade highs, with the 10-year at 5.28 percent, kept a lid on the metal's recovery.

In India, MCX gold slipped on Monday to 1,49,150 rupees per 10 grams, down 1,245 rupees, while silver held firmer. The Fed's October 28 policy decision is the next trigger for bullion.
