BPCL’s Rs 1-trillion Andhra refinery gets green nod

Bharat Petroleum’s proposed Rs 1-trillion greenfield refinery project in Andhra Pradesh has received a recommendation for environmental clearance, Business Standard reported.
The refinery-cum-petrochemical complex is planned near Ramayapatnam Port, between Prakasam and Nellore districts. It will have a capacity of 9 million tonnes per annum.
BPCL Chairman and Managing Director Sanjay Khanna told Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu that the project is now estimated to cost around Rs 1.45 lakh crore. The final investment cost will be firmed up in October after a study by Engineers India Limited.
The refinery is expected to produce Euro-6 standard fuels, including motor spirit, high-speed diesel and aviation turbine fuel, of about 5.4 million tonnes. Petrochemical products will account for another 3.2 million tonnes. The complex will process domestic and imported crude oil and strengthen links with ports and logistics corridors. The government is aiming to raise India’s total refining capacity to 450 million tonnes per annum by 2035.
Naidu said 75 percent of the 6,000 acres needed for the project has been handed over. He asked BPCL to start construction work at the earliest.
