HDFC Bank Names Anup Bagchi MD and CEO for Three Years

The Reserve Bank of India has approved the appointment of Anup Bagchi as managing director and chief executive officer of HDFC Bank for three years, starting October 27, 2026. The approval was granted under Section 35B of the Banking Regulation Act.
Bagchi will succeed Sashidhar Jagdishan, whose term ends on October 26, 2026. He will join the bank as an Additional Director from October 2, 2026, before taking charge as chief executive.
Bagchi is currently the managing director and CEO of ICICI Prudential Life Insurance and has been with the ICICI Group since 1992. He is an alumnus of IIT Kanpur and IIM Bangalore.
His appointment makes him the first outsider to lead HDFC Bank in about 32 years. The move signals a generational leadership change at India’s largest private-sector lender, which has been steered for decades by internal successors. The bank said the leadership transition would ensure continuity as it consolidates its position after the HDFC Ltd merger.
