Amazon may move $8B of Nvidia chips into investor-owned vehicle

Amazon is seeking to move about 8 billion dollars of advanced Nvidia chips into an investment vehicle owned by outside investors, Reuters reported on October 2, citing the Financial Times.
The cloud giant has held talks with investors in recent weeks about a deal that would transfer thousands of Nvidia’s Grace Blackwell chips, installed in its US data centres, into a special-purpose vehicle. Amazon would then lease the chips back from the vehicle.
The vehicle would raise money from outside investors through debt issuance, the FT said. Amazon plans to offer an equity stake of up to 10 per cent in it, adopting a more asset-light approach to its balance sheet.
The chips were bought or leased by Amazon and sit in more than a dozen US data centres across five states, including Nevada and Virginia. Amazon and Nvidia did not immediately respond to Reuters for comment.
The talks show how the AI infrastructure boom is pushing Big Tech toward Wall Street-style financing to fund the huge cost of computing power.
