AI Tops Reasons for US Job Cuts: 120,136 So Far in 2026

Artificial intelligence has become the leading stated reason for US job cuts for the first time. Through September 2026, employers attributed 120,136 announced layoffs to AI, about 21% of the 573,195 total tracked by Challenger, Gray & Christmas.
September itself was quieter. Employers announced 43,281 cuts, down 18% from August, and AI accounted for just 3,961 of them, the fifth most-cited reason behind market conditions, closings, demand downturns and restructuring.
The honest reading is that AI did not surge to the top; other reasons fell away faster. The report points to slow substitution at the margin rather than a wave of mass redundancies, according to Challenger. Technology is the hardest-hit industry at 165,925 cuts, up 54% on the same period of 2025.
Andy Challenger said companies are in a wait-and-see period, citing high energy costs, the war in Iran and the likelihood of surging healthcare costs.
Why it matters: the numbers show AI is reshaping work gradually, but the direction of travel is clear.
