Adani’s Kutch Copper Plans 115 MW Renewable Energy Push
Kutch Copper Limited, a subsidiary of Adani Enterprises Limited, has outlined an ambitious growth strategy centred on sustainability, decarbonisation and resource efficiency, as it seeks to strengthen India’s copper production capacity and support the country’s energy transition.
In its maiden sustainability report, released in Ahmedabad on Sunday, October 11, the company highlighted its commitment to integrating environmental, social and governance principles into its business strategy, with key focus areas including renewable energy adoption, responsible water management, emissions control, resource conservation and community development.
The 115 MW renewable plan
As part of its decarbonisation roadmap, Kutch Copper plans to integrate 115 megawatts of renewable energy into its operations. A key element of the company’s sustainability strategy, the planned integration is described as a significant step towards reducing the carbon footprint of its operations and advancing long-term decarbonisation goals. The initiative is expected to help reduce the carbon footprint of its manufacturing activities while supporting the company’s long-term sustainability objectives.
The company said it operates on nearly 100 per cent desalinated water and follows a zero-liquid-discharge approach to reduce dependence on freshwater and improve water conservation. It added that it is currently treating 99.8 per cent of sulphur emissions, reflecting its commitment to adopting global standards in environmental stewardship and pollution control by leveraging advanced environmental technologies.
Doubling smelting capacity
Kutch Copper currently operates a greenfield copper refinery in Mundra, in the Kutch region of Gujarat, with a copper smelting capacity of 0.5 million tonnes per annum. The company plans to increase this capacity to 1 million tonnes per annum, positioning the facility to become the world’s largest single-location custom copper smelter. The broader Adani Group has committed 1.2 billion dollars to the project, signalling long-term confidence in domestic copper production.
Why copper matters
The company believes copper will play an increasingly important role in achieving national and global climate goals, given its growing use in renewable energy systems, electric mobility, power transmission and other clean energy technologies. With demand for the metal expected to rise alongside infrastructure development and industrial expansion, Kutch Copper aims to increase production capacity while maintaining a strong focus on responsible manufacturing practices and embedding sustainability considerations into business decisions, operations and stakeholder engagement.
