Supreme Court shields Tata Chemicals from action in Gujarat case

The Supreme Court has given Tata Chemicals interim protection in an environmental case in Gujarat. On October 5, the court restrained the Gujarat government from taking any coercive action against the company. The order covers an ongoing land-rights dispute linked to the company’s Mithapur plant. A bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant passed the order. Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V. Mohana were also on the bench. The court issued a notice to the Gujarat government. The state must respond by November 2. The case stems from a Gujarat High Court order from May 25. That order held Tata Chemicals liable for environmental damage to the marine sanctuary in the Gulf of Kutch. The High Court said the company’s unit kept discharging trade effluent and industrial wastewater in an ecologically sensitive zone. It applied the polluter pays principle for the damage to the fragile ecology. Tata Chemicals had first informed stock exchanges about the High Court proceedings on May 26, 2026. The dispute relates to legacy open wastewater channels at Mithapur that ran into the sea. Shares of Tata Chemicals recovered from the day’s low after the order. The stock traded near flat at around 617 rupees.
