Sitharaman: Next GST reforms to ease compliance, boost economy

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday said the next phase of Goods and Services Tax reforms will focus on easing compliance for businesses and boosting economic growth. She was speaking at an event in New Delhi, where she outlined the government’s approach to indirect tax reform.
The GST Council is deliberating proposals to bring more predictability to the tax regime, including ending mid-year rate alterations. Other items under discussion include rationalisation of input tax credit for real estate and construction, wider vehicle ITC access, and export status for clinical trials conducted for foreign sponsors.
The minister’s remarks come as the government pushes its economic agenda through the second half of FY27. Industry groups have long asked for simpler compliance and fewer rate changes. Sitharaman has repeatedly said the reforms are meant to reduce the compliance burden while keeping revenues stable. The GST Council is expected to take up the proposals in its upcoming meetings.
