Chennai Metro crosses 1 crore trips in September

Chennai Metro Rail Limited reported a record September, with over one crore passenger trips during the month.
It is the third consecutive month that ridership has crossed the eight-figure mark, indicating a sustained shift toward metro travel among the city’s commuters.
Officials attribute the growth to expanded services, improved last-mile connectivity and fare options that have made the metro competitive with road transport.
The ridership milestone comes as the city expands its network. Phase-2 tunneling achieved a breakthrough at Kilpauk Medical College on September 30, and the state government is preparing to hand over MRTS operations to CMRL within three months.
Transport planners say consistent ridership above one crore a month strengthens the case for further expansion and better integration with buses and suburban rail.
Chennai’s experience reflects a broader national trend, with metro systems in several Indian cities posting record numbers as urban commuters seek reliable alternatives to congested roads.
