UN Chief Condemns FlyDubai Co-Pilot Attack, Emergency Landing Averted

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has condemned the attack on a Tel Aviv-bound FlyDubai flight, in which the co-pilot allegedly tried to crash the aircraft on September 30. Guterres said he was relieved that tragedy was averted.
Flight FZ1073 was travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv when the co-pilot allegedly stabbed Captain Smit Machchhar, an Indian national, and the Boeing 737 plunged more than 17,000 feet in under 30 seconds, according to media reports. The crew and passengers overpowered the co-pilot, and the plane made an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.
The 182 people on board were unharmed. Machchhar, recovering in an Abu Dhabi hospital, told Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a video call that he fought for his life to save his passengers. He has been hailed as a hero.
The suspect, an Omani national, is in custody. The UAE attorney-general said investigations are ongoing to establish the motives and any links. FlyDubai has suspended Tel Aviv flights until further notice.
Why it matters: the incident has raised urgent questions about pilot vetting and cockpit security.
