Five men have been arrested near RAF Fairford after a major incident in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Gloucestershire Police received a call around 12:45am about three suspicious vehicles traveling toward the base, which is used by the United States Air Force. Armed officers responded and arrested five men in the Whelford area on suspicion of offences under the Explosives Act.
The men were later further arrested on suspicion of preparation of a terrorist act, the Metropolitan Police said. Counter-terrorism officers are leading the investigation.
Eighty-five households were evacuated from their homes in Whelford as a precaution. The Army’s explosive ordnance disposal unit is examining the vehicles. A 400-meter cordon remains in place.
Police said the operation was not intelligence-led, meaning investigators had not known about any potential plot in advance. Defence Secretary Wes Streeting said people “can be reassured” the incident is being dealt with. The Prime Minister is being kept updated.
