Tompkins County District Attorney Matthew Van Houten is reopening the 2024 criminal investigation into an alleged gang rape at Cornell University, according to CNN. He plans to present the case to the grand jury with the woman’s cooperation.

The civil lawsuit, filed between Sept 14 and 16, 2026, alleges that seven members of the Chi Phi fraternity drugged and sexually assaulted a former student at the fraternity house in October 2024. None has been criminally charged.

The DA said the new allegations are “dramatically different” from her earlier police statement, in which she did not say she was drugged without her knowledge or forced, the New York Post reported.

The suit also claims the accused were allowed to “mitigate their conduct by submitting essays,” a claim Cornell denied. Her attorney says two of the seven were expelled and others received suspensions and workshops. Cornell says privacy law bars it from discussing punishments.

Florence Pugh urged men to speak out about the case, and actor Josh Gad also criticized the university. What comes next: if the grand jury takes up the case, it could become one of few recent campus assault cases to reach criminal trial proceedings.
