CBI chargesheets RCom, ex-LIC CIO in Rs 3,750-cr fraud case

The CBI has filed a chargesheet against Reliance Communications and three senior executives in the Rs 3,750-crore LIC investment fraud case. The chargesheet was filed on Saturday before the Special Judge for CBI Cases in Mumbai. The accused are Reliance Communications Ltd, Amitabh Jhunjhunwala, group managing director of the Reliance ADA Group, Vishwas Joshi, senior vice-president of Reliance Capital, and P. Venugopal, the then chief investment officer of LIC. They have been booked for criminal conspiracy, cheating and criminal breach of trust under the IPC, along with offences under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. The agency says that in 2012, LIC subscribed to non-convertible debentures worth Rs 1,500 crore issued by RCom, on the basis of what the CBI calls serious misrepresentations. The funds were then diverted to other ADA group companies, causing wrongful loss to LIC and wrongful gain to the accused. The CBI registered the case on April 1, 2026 on a complaint from LIC. It is the eighth chargesheet in a wider set of probes, with nine FIRs against Reliance ADA entities and seven arrests made earlier. The agency says further investigation is continuing.
