Bayer's pharmaceuticals unit on Friday unveiled plans to invest 2.2 billion dollars in a new pharmaceutical manufacturing site in New Albany, Ohio, as part of a push to boost its US revenue.

The company expects to create about 600 high-paying jobs in New Albany, with another 1,500 jobs resulting temporarily from construction. The flexible, modular campus will combine drug substance and drug product manufacturing using advanced digital and automation technologies.

The facility will initially support Bayer's oncology, cardiovascular and renal portfolios. The first module, for drug substance manufacturing, should be operational in 2031, with a drug product module following in 2034.

"Bayer has long seen the United States as a key manufacturing base and innovation hub," said CEO Bill Anderson. "This landmark investment underscores our commitment."

The investment builds on more than 7 billion dollars Bayer has spent on US pharmaceutical research and development and manufacturing over the past five years.

Sebastian Guth, chief operating officer for pharmaceuticals, said the US share of global revenue has risen to 35 per cent from 20 per cent in 2018, and the company aims to double US sales by the end of the decade.

Among the main products to underpin the expansion are Kerendia to treat chronic kidney disease, prostate cancer drug Nubeqa and drug candidate asundexian to prevent strokes.
