BA Flight Plunges 27,000 Feet, Returns to Heathrow

A British Airways flight from London to Chicago dropped about 27,000 feet within minutes on Monday, October 5, and returned to Heathrow after declaring an emergency.
Flight BA295, a Boeing 777-200ER registered G-VIIA, left Heathrow at about 11:50 a.m. for an eight-hour trip to Chicago O’Hare. Around half an hour into the flight, tracking data showed it falling from 36,000 feet to 9,000 feet over Ireland, according to FlightAware.
The crew issued a squawk 7700 emergency code. Oxygen masks deployed during the steep descent, and the aircraft circled over the UK for nearly five hours to burn fuel before landing safely at Heathrow around 5 p.m. Passengers disembarked normally.
British Airways said the return followed a technical issue and did not specify the cause. The airline said safety was its top priority and that it was helping passengers rebook.
The incident comes less than a month after UK air-traffic control issues cancelled thousands of flights.
