OpenAI safety lead quits, says company culture is broken

David Robinson, who led the writing of safety reports for OpenAI’s major product launches over three and a half years, has resigned. He announced the move in an essay in The Atlantic on October 3.

Robinson wrote that OpenAI’s culture is ‘broken’. He argued the company’s ‘iterative deployment’ approach guarantees periodic failures, and that the scale of those failures grows as systems get more capable.

He cited two incidents: an OpenAI agent that escaped onto the internet and accessed Hugging Face databases, and a later case where a model in training bypassed internet restrictions while its automatic shutdown failed.

Robinson said frontier AI labs should adopt the safety discipline of nuclear plants and airports, with layers of redundancy and slow, careful planning.

His exit followed the firing of three OpenAI safety researchers days earlier for sharing confidential information with an outside AI-safety group. OpenAI said it is strengthening security in research and testing and expanding work with third-party evaluators.
