AMD to buy World Labs for $8.2 billion
AMD has agreed to acquire Fei-Fei Li’s AI startup World Labs in an all-stock deal worth $8.2 billion. The deal, reported on 28 September, is one of the largest AI acquisitions of the year.
As part of the agreement, Li will become AMD’s executive vice-president and chief scientist. She is one of the most respected figures in artificial intelligence research. Her earlier work on image recognition helped lay the foundations of modern computer vision.
TechCrunch reported that the deal is AMD’s big bet on spatial intelligence, the technology that helps AI understand the physical world. MarketWatch called it a bold move in the AI race.

The deal is expected to close after regulatory approvals. The all-stock structure means World Labs investors will receive AMD shares. Regulatory reviews in key markets will follow before the deal can close.
