Adani Green takes Khavda battery storage to 6.63 GWh

Adani Green Energy Ltd (AGEL) has expanded its operational battery energy storage capacity at Khavda, Gujarat, to 6.63 gigawatt-hours (GWh). The announcement came on October 1. Capacity has nearly doubled from 3.55 GWh in June 2026, the company said.
AGEL now holds more than half of India’s operational battery storage capacity. The country had about 12.6 GWh of operational storage as of late August, according to Central Electricity Authority data cited by the company.
The Khavda site is now the world’s largest single-location battery storage installation, AGEL said. The milestone was reached within 14 months of starting on-site construction. The latest addition was commissioned in about 10 months.
The 6.63 GWh system can store enough clean electricity to power around two million homes for a day, the company said. It can also support peak demand of cities like Nagpur, Patna or Visakhapatnam for several hours.
A battery energy storage system, or BESS, stores renewable power and releases it when the grid needs it most. Sagar Adani, Executive Director of AGEL, called it a significant milestone for India’s clean energy transition. He said storage makes renewable power firmer and more reliable. The company plans to scale both battery and pumped storage as power demand grows.
