India face Brazil in historic Kolkata football friendly
India will play five-time world champions Brazil in a historic football friendly in Kolkata on Saturday.
The match kicks off at 7 PM IST at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan, popularly known as Salt Lake Stadium. It is the first senior men’s meeting between the two nations.
Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti has named a strong 26-man squad featuring Vinicius Junior, Raphinha and Endrick, along with Marquinhos, Gabriel Magalhaes and Bruno Guimaraes.
India, ranked 138th in the world, face the world No. 5. Coach Khalid Jamil has picked a young squad, saying the players will gain valuable experience against top-tier opposition.
The fixture is part of India’s October international window. The Blue Tigers faced Panama in Bengaluru on September 25 and will host Uruguay in Kolkata on October 6.
Tickets priced between Rs 999 and Rs 15,000 sold out quickly. The AIFF has released 14,000 discounted tickets for Kolkata clubs through the Indian Football Association.
Why it matters: the match is the biggest in Indian football history and puts the country’s game under the global spotlight.
