UPSC Turns 100: Modi Hails Youth’s Trust in Body

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday attended the centenary celebrations of the Union Public Service Commission at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. The event marked 100 years since India’s first Public Service Commission was set up on October 1, 1926. Modi described the institution’s journey as a celebration of the aspirations of millions of young Indians and the trust of every Indian. On the occasion, he released a UPSC Centenary Commemorative Coin, a commemorative stamp and a book titled ‘100 Landmark Judgements’. Modi said recruitment examinations should test not only what a candidate knows, but also why the young person wants to join the civil services. He gave two guiding principles for public service: ‘Nation First’ and ‘Citizen First’. Recalling history, he noted that Subhas Chandra Bose had appeared for the civil services examination in 1920 and written his paper in Sanskrit. He credited Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel with giving the country its ‘steel frame’ of civil services.
