Even One Daily Drink Raises Cancer Risk, Studies Find

Just one alcoholic drink a day can raise the risk of cancer and early death, new research shows.
A June 2026 study in the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs found one daily drink raised all-cause mortality risk by 5 to 8 percent.
Separately, US alcohol-related cancer deaths doubled from 11,361 in 1990 to 23,126 in 2023, researchers at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center reported.
One drink a day was linked to higher deaths from cirrhosis, esophageal and oral cancers. The findings were published in The Lancet Regional Health-Americas.
Researchers say there is no safe level of drinking. The alcohol industry disputes some of the claims.
Doctors advise drinking as little as possible.
