Russia hits Ukraine grid, killing seven, forcing power cuts

Russia has launched one of its largest combined assaults on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure in months, killing seven people and forcing emergency power cuts.
Missiles and drones struck energy facilities around Kyiv and other regions on Wednesday. Ukraine’s grid operator Ukrenergo imposed emergency cuts in the capital and three surrounding regions, the first such measure in Kyiv since spring.
A key thermal power plant in Kyiv was damaged. Trams and trolleybuses ground to a halt, and water pressure dropped in parts of the city, Reuters reported.
Ukrainian officials said seven people were killed and several injured. Prime Minister Sergii Koretskyi said a combined strike of this scale had not happened since the end of the last heating season.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said the capital’s energy infrastructure was the main target and called for stronger air defences.
The attacks come as Ukraine heads into winter, when heating demand rises and repair crews struggle to keep up with damage.
