Restate raises $20M Series A for AI agent workflow engine

Restate, the Berlin startup founded by the creators of Apache Flink, has this week raised a $20 million Series A to build what it calls a durable execution engine for AI agent workflows. The round was led by Singular, with Redpoint Ventures and Capital One Ventures participating, taking total funding to $27 million.
The company says its technology lets software “remember what it has already done” and resume correctly after crashes, restarts or network failures — a problem that gets harder as AI agents fan out over long, unpredictable multi-step tasks. “It never was built for agents in the beginning, but it just happened to be a perfect match for all these problems that agents surface,” co-founder Stephan Ewen told TechCrunch. Ewen previously co-created Apache Flink.
Customers already include the coding platform Replit, whose latest agent runs on Restate, along with DOSS, BILT Rewards and Fortune 500 financial-services firms. The company says it has recently closed multiple six- and seven-figure contracts. The new money will fund product development and US expansion, including a new commercial hub in San Francisco. Rival Temporal recently raised $550 million at a $12.55 billion valuation.
