Part of Ujjain’s Shahi Masjid will be removed for a road-widening project linked to the 2028 Simhastha fair, officials said on Wednesday.

The 900-metre stretch from Kanthal Square to Gopal Mandir is being widened to 15 metres. Collector Roshan Kumar Singh said the mosque committee has agreed to remove the affected portion of the structure itself, according to reports.

The demolition order had triggered protests on September 28. Clashes broke out between demonstrators and police, who used tear gas and baton charges to disperse the crowd. More than 2,500 police personnel were deployed across the area.

Police have arrested about 14 people and booked more than 30 in connection with the violence, officials said.

The Madhya Pradesh High Court on Wednesday disposed of a petition against the demolition after the mosque committee and the administration reached a compromise. The court was informed that the removal would proceed by mutual agreement.
