Akshay Kumar’s latest release Haiwaan has opened to a disastrous box office, netting just Rs 9.92 crore on its first day against a reported budget of around Rs 130 crore.

The opening-day figure represents roughly a 92% shortfall against the film’s budget — one of the weakest starts for an Akshay Kumar starrer in recent years.

Trade analysts say the film struggled with poor word of mouth and competition from other releases, with advance bookings showing weakness even before release.

Director Priyadarshan, known for his comedy collaborations with Kumar, has meanwhile said he has ruled out making any more non-comedy films with the actor.

The flop adds to a difficult run for Kumar at the box office, where several recent releases have underperformed despite the star’s enduring fan base.

Trade watchers say the industry is now recalibrating expectations for big-budget star vehicles, as audiences increasingly reserve theatre visits for films with strong reviews.
