OpenAI has launched Dots, always-on artificial intelligence agents that run inside ChatGPT and work toward goals around the clock, at its DevDay 2026 event in San Francisco. Each Dot gets its own cloud computer and browser, allowing it to browse the web, use more than 4,000 connected apps and complete tasks without being prompted. The agents are powered by GPT-6 Astra, OpenAI's flagship model, and learn a user's preferences over time. OpenAI described Dots as a step from assistants that answer questions to agents that keep working when the user is away. One Dot is included in Pro and Business Premium plans. The launch headlined more than 20 announcements at the Fort Mason event, alongside a shared workspace called ChatGPT Space and plugin extensions. The move puts OpenAI in direct competition with rival agent products, as the industry races to build AI that acts rather than just responds. OpenAI said developers can also build their own Dots using the new plugin extensions.
