The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the Green Energy Corridor Phase-III scheme with an outlay of ₹1.86 lakh crore to build transmission infrastructure for renewable power. The project will evacuate up to 135 GW of renewable energy and deploy 50 GWh of battery energy storage across states and Union territories. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the decision after the Cabinet meeting. Of the total project outlay of ₹1,86,405 crore, ₹1,36,378 crore will go to intra-state transmission systems and ₹50,000 crore to battery storage. The Centre will provide ₹54,082 crore as financial assistance. The scheme is targeted for completion by FY2032-33. Officials said transmission capacity must be built ahead of renewable generation, or clean power would face curtailment. The battery systems will address intermittency, congestion and peak-hour shortfalls, and help meet demand during non-solar hours.
