World Heart Day 2026: Don’t Miss a Beat, say doctors

World Heart Day was observed on September 29 with the theme “Don’t Miss a Beat,” urging people to recognise early warning signs of heart disease and act on them quickly.
Doctors emphasised that cardiovascular disease remains the world’s leading cause of death, and symptoms are often subtle. Chest discomfort, breathlessness, unusual fatigue and palpitations should never be ignored or dismissed as minor ailments.
The campaign focuses on preventable risk factors: tobacco use, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, alcohol, hypertension, diabetes and high cholesterol. Small lifestyle changes, they said, can dramatically reduce risk over time for most people.
In Jammu, a walkathon was organised from Bikram Chowk to the Super Speciality Hospital to spread awareness. Similar events, health camps and free screening drives were held across the country, drawing large public participation.
Cardiologists recommend regular blood pressure and cholesterol checks after age 30. They say timely medical attention during the “golden hour” of a cardiac event saves lives, so call emergency services without delay.
