Trump weighs new Iran sanctions while keeping door open to talks
US President Donald Trump has said he is weighing major new sanctions on Iran even as he keeps the door open for negotiations with Tehran.
Speaking at a White House briefing, Trump said Iran was “in big trouble” economically and that its leadership wanted to make a deal. He did not rule out military options if talks fail.
The comments come as Washington presses Tehran over its nuclear programme and support for regional proxies. Previous rounds of talks in Oman and Geneva ended without agreement.
Trump has reimposed a maximum-pressure campaign since returning to office, targeting Iran’s oil exports and financial networks. European allies have urged restraint to avoid escalation.
Analysts say the dual-track approach of threats and talks has defined Trump’s Iran policy. Whether Tehran engages will depend on the severity of any new sanctions package. Oil markets were steady as traders weighed the prospects of tighter sanctions against possible diplomacy.
