Neeru Dhanda wins India’s first women’s trap gold
Neeru Dhanda clinched India’s first-ever women’s trap gold at the Asian Games on Monday, setting an Asian record of 28 in the final at the Aichi-Nagoya Games.
The 26-year-old from Punjab also shot a superb 118 in qualification, finishing on top of the leaderboard before holding her nerve in the medal round.
China’s Sun Yunong took silver with 26, while Kuwait’s Hajar Abdulmalik claimed bronze with 21, in a final where Dhanda never looked under pressure.
It was India’s fifth gold of the Games and a landmark moment for Indian shooting, which has rarely medalled in women’s trap at this level.
Dhanda, a Naib Subedar in the Indian Army, also won a team silver earlier alongside Aashima Ahlawat and Manisha Keer. Her coach credited years of patient work on technique and mental conditioning. The gold is expected to give a major boost to trap shooting in India ahead of future Olympics.
