Delhi-NCR turns dry as monsoon retreats
Delhi-NCR is turning dry as the southwest monsoon begins its retreat from northwest India.
The India Meteorological Department had forecast light showers around September 29, with dry weather setting in after that. Day temperatures are expected to stay between 32 and 34 degrees Celsius.
The IMD said conditions became favourable for the monsoon's withdrawal from parts of west Rajasthan around September 19. Dry air is now moving into the northwest, marking the first major step in the season's retreat.
The withdrawal is not expected to be smooth everywhere. A low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal may keep rain going in central and eastern India even as the northwest dries out.
This year's monsoon has been weak overall. The all-India deficit stood at 15 percent as of mid-September, with the south peninsula hit hardest.
For Delhi residents, the change means clearer skies but continued warmth. The city usually sees the monsoon leave by late September or early October.
