Netanyahu holds secret Abu Dhabi talks, official says
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu secretly visited Abu Dhabi on Sunday and met the president of the UAE for about one hour, an Israeli official said.
The visit was not announced in advance. The official confirmed the trip after reports of the meeting appeared in the media on September 28 and 29.
The meeting comes amid a dispute over an alleged warning before the October 7, 2023 attacks. Some reports, attributed to Haaretz, say the UAE president warned Netanyahu of a major Hamas operation days before the attack. Netanyahu's office has denied that version of events. The claim is disputed and has not been confirmed by Israel or the UAE.
The UAE and Israel established full diplomatic ties in 2020 under the Abraham Accords. Since then, the two countries have expanded trade, tourism and security cooperation.
The secret nature of the visit has drawn attention. Analysts say the leaders may have discussed Gaza, regional security and the Abraham Accords. No joint statement was issued.
